The AMME is a French industrial manufacturer that designs and builds assembly line robots and other specialty machines for the automotive, pharmaceutical, and agri-food industries. The design team at AMME manages many one-off parts for customer prototypes and production machines which are costly, complex to outsource, and challenging to produce using traditional in-house methods. AMME was looking for a new way to manufacture low-volume complex parts that could withstand the industrial stresses.
The team started with a complex aluminum clamp bit that is difficult to fabricate using traditional methods. They used Markforged 3D printers to print the clamp bit and found them both easy to use and capable of quickly fabricating strong, lightweight parts. AMME designers and engineers printed the clamp bit in carbon fiber-reinforced Onyx overnight, and were impressed with its high strength, quality, and cost — ten times cheaper than the traditionally-made alternative. AMME has subsequently reduced the need for external suppliers, with roughly 10% of all parts now 3D printed using Markforged technology.
