The University of Wollongong's Surf Flex Laboratory is a dedicated facility that tests surfing equipment. They began experimenting with 3D printing through a program funded by the University's Global Challenges program.
Using Markforged technology, the Surf Flex Lab was able to rapidly prototype and customize surfboard fins that were ready for testing both in laboratory conditions and by surfers in the ocean. These fins, printed in Onyx and continuous carbon fiber, offered weight, performance, and durability comparable to fins on the market, without the expensive and time-consuming molding process.
