IMCG Group is a French specialist in boiler-making, general mechanics, and industrial maintenance that manufactures and provides full service on multiple machines for the steel industry. They began working with Markforged 3D printers chiefly for prototyping, and were surprised at the capabilities of 3D printed parts reinforced with continuous fiber. When they received a highly-customized order for a specialized large-scale finishing machine, they turned to 3D printing to lower cost and lead time.
IMCG manufactures large-scale finishing machines once or twice a year. These machines are completely custom, and require multiple unique pieces. Parts like this centering roller were typically machined in-house or subcontracted out of metal, but were especially costly and time consuming due to the low annual production volume. 3D printing mechanical components in fiber-reinforced Onyx — including sensor supports, roller guides, and centerings — reduces cost, simplifies the supply chain, and enables IMCG to maintain a digital inventory for custom manufacturing and replacement parts on demand.
